TAU-Xpress Repair
The TAU-XR is a MASH TL3 compliant crash cushion designed to shield the blunt ends of concrete barriers and other hazards. The TAU-XR is classified as a Low Maintenance Crash Cushion, providing rapid repair & reusability of components following design impacts. This is an important design consideration for installation on high traffic volume roadways and hazardous locations. The TAU-XR features crushable aluminium tubes designed to absorb kinetic energy and safely contain vehicles during head on impacts while the side panels safely redirect vehicles during side impacts.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the TAU-XR work?
Tested to MASH Test Level 3, the TAU-XR is a redirective, non-gating crash-attenuating system designed specifically for high-frequency impact locations with the safety of maintenance workers as a top priority. The crushable energy-absorbing aluminium tubes are simple and intuitive to replace. The TAU-XR can be repaired in less than 30 minutes after head-on or side impacts, minimising workers’ exposure to traffic.
What is a low maintenance crash cushion?
A crash cushion is regarded as Low Maintenance if more than 90% of components are reusable following design impacts.
When should I consider installing a low maintenance crash cushion?
Low Maintenance Crash Cushions are recommended on high traffic volume roadways and hazardous locations including gore areas, exit ramps, shielding of median barriers and construction workzones.
What are the major differences between the TAU-M and TAU-XR crash cushions?
The TAU-M uses heavy large-diameter steel cables to attenuate side impacts and large plastic barrels to attenuate the energy during head-on impacts. The TAU-XR uses double heavy-duty steel rails for side impacts, and small square aluminium tubes to absorb head-on impacts.
What components of the TAU-XR need to be replaced after a design impact?
Typically, after a head-on impact, the aluminium tubes will need replaced. After a side impact, as few as two side panels will need replaced.
How quickly can the TAU-XR be repaired?
The TAU-XR is designed to be repaired onsite in approximately 30 minutes minimising disruption to traffic and reducing the exposure of workers.
What type of foundation is required for the installation of the TAU-XR system?
The TAU-XR can be secured to a concrete pad or asphalt. Please refer to the Product Manual.
What types of transitions are available?
The TAU-XR features thrie-beam side panels that may be connected to a public domain thrie-beam transition. If the TAU-XR is installed at the end of a concrete barrier and traffic travels in the reverse direction to the crash cushion, a transition preventing pocketing at the interface between the systems is required.
What is the width of the TAU-XR?
The TAU-XR is just 610 mm wide.
What is the length of the TAU-XR?
The TAU-XR is 6.4 m long.
