RhinoStop SkyEdge
The unique design of RhinoStop SkyEdge positions the crash barrier on the outer edge of the car park deck. The alignment of the w-beam guardrail with the edge of the deck ensures the barrier does not encroach into valuable space allocated for car parking. RhinoStop SkyEdge has become the preferred solution for upgrading existing car parks that have limited floor space and cannot accommodate the additional width of a safety barrier system.
The yielding behaviour of the RhinoStop SkyEdge baseplate absorbs vehicle impact energy, reducing the peak loads transferred to the anchor bolts. The system may be configured with handrail and mesh infill providing pedestrian fall protection along the permitter edge of elevated car parks. The fully modular system uses off-the-shelf components facilitating rapid supply and installation and can be customised on site to suit specific project dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does RhinoStop SkyEdge work?
The yielding behaviour of the RhinoStop SkyEdge baseplate absorbs vehicle impact energy, reducing the peak loads transferred to the anchor bolts. The deflection of the system allows for greater load transfer to the adjacent posts, sharing the impact load from the vehicle.
Can RhinoStop SkyEdge be installed along the perimeter edge of a multi-storey car park?
Yes, RhinoStop SkyEdge has been full-scale crash tested when installed along the edge of a 150 mm thick elevated concrete slab representing an elevated car park. This crash test configuration is designed to evaluate vehicle impact behaviour as the system deflects beyond the edge of the car park structure.
Can RhinoStop SkyEdge be installed with a handrail system?
Yes. If RhinoStop SkyEdge is installed to shield a drop to a lower level and the area is frequented by pedestrians, the barrier may be installed with a handrail and mesh infill providing pedestrian fall protection.
What is the footprint of RhinoStop SkyEdge?
Since RhinoStop SkyEdge positions the post on the outer edge of the elevated concrete deck, the system can be considered a zero-footprint barrier. This is an important consideration when retrofitting to existing car parks where space may be limited and car parking spaces cannot be reduced.
Why is it important to understand the crash test performance of a barrier system?
Crash testing is designed to evaluate the behaviour of the barrier and vehicle during a collision. It is important that the crash tested configuration is representative of a real-life installation. Therefore, a barrier promoted for use in a multi-storey car park should be assessed when installed on the edge of an elevated concrete deck. In addition, shorter installation lengths place a higher load on the supporting posts increasing the potential for failure. These considerations are adopted by Safe Direction for the crash test assessment of its RhinoStop product range.
Why is it important to consider a 2000 kg vehicle when selecting a crash barrier system?
The average weight of new vehicle sold in Australia is approximately 2000 kg as the vehicle fleet continues to shift towards SUVs and dual cab utility vehicles. It is therefore important that the specified car park barrier has demonstrated the ability to withstand these heavier vehicle impacts.
How many anchors does each RhinoStop SkyEdge post require?
The RhinoStop SkyEdge post incorporates a unique patented yielding base plate that minimises the peak loads transferred to the anchor bolts. Each RhinoStop SkyEdge post is secured to the concrete slab with just one (1) M20 anchor bolt facilitating rapid installation and reducing the potential for conflict with concrete reinforcement.
What is the standard post spacing of a RhinoStop SkyEdge installation?
The standard post spacing for the installation of RhinoStop SkyEdge is 2.0 m centres.
How is RhinoStop SkyEdge manufactured?
RhinoStop SkyEdge is an all-steel construction. The RhinoStop SkyEdge posts and w-beam guardrails are hot dip galvanised.
What is the weight of each RhinoStop SkyEdge post?
The RhinoStop SkyEdge post weights just 15 kg. A handle-like grip facilitates ease of lifting.
