RamShield Transition
The RamShield Transition provides a smooth, snag-free connection between steel guardrail barriers and rigid barriers, such as at bridge parapets. The RamShield Transition gradually increases stiffness of the safety barrier system reducing the potential for vehicle pocketing. The RamShield Transition achieves a controlled redirection of errant vehicles by releasing the thrie-beam guardrail from the post at an optimal load to retain rail height, limit dynamic deflection and to allow the post to collapse without tripping the vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a transition?
Wherever it is necessary to change from one type of barrier to another, or to physically join them together (e.g. a bridge barrier to a road barrier), the interface must be designed to ensure that the overall system will perform safely when impacted by a design vehicle.
How does the RamShield Transition work?
The RamShield Transition provides a smooth, snag-free connection between steel guardrail barriers and rigid barriers, such as at bridge parapets. The RamShield Transition gradually increases stiffness of the system reducing the potential for vehicle pocketing.
Can the RamShield Transition be installed with blocking pieces?
The installation of the RamShield Transition does not require blocking pieces, however, at constrained sites where a kerb or an underground service interferes with the alignment of the posts, a 200mm blocking piece may be installed at each post between the thrie-beam guardrail.
What is the function of the top mount bracket?
The 1000 mm thrie-beam rail height of the RamShield Transition improves vehicle stability during containment and redirection. When connecting the RamShield Transition to an abutment that is lower than 1000 mm, the top mount bracket is used to correctly position the terminal connector.
How is the terminal connector connected to a concrete abutment?
Unlike traditional guardrail transition designs that require cast-in ferrules, the terminal connector of the RamShield Transition is secured to the concrete abutment using mechanical anchors. This simplifies installation and ensures the RamShield Transition is positioned at the correct height to facilitate stable vehicle redirection.
In what other applications is the RamShield Transition required?
The RamShield Transition is suitable for connecting RamShield guardrail systems to various rigid barriers, including the CrocGuard bridge and culvert barrier.
What is the asymmetric transition panel?
The use of an asymmetric transition is required to connect thrie-beam guardrail to w-beam guardrail. The asymmetric transition lowers the height to top of the thrie-beam rail by 200 mm, making it compatible for use with RamShield W-Beam guardrail and MSKT terminals, which are installed with a rail height of 800 mm above ground level.
Is nesting of the thrie-beam guardrail required?
No. The RamShield Transition features 3.5 mm thick thrie-beam guardrail eliminating the requirement for nesting of the thrie-beam guardrails.
Are the RamShield Transition posts interchangeable with RamShield High Containment posts?
Yes. The RamShield Transition features 1860 mm C-posts as used in the assembly of RamShield High Containment.
Does the installation of the RamShield Transition require a specially engineered concrete abutment?
No. MASH Test Level 3 (TL3) crash testing was performed with the RamShield Transition connected to the same anchor block design nominated for the Austroads public domain SBTA-21-005 Transition.
