RamShield Edge
RamShield Edge is an engineered solution, designed for attachment to RamShield High Containment for installations on the hinge point of weak batters. RamShield Edge uses an innovative below-ground pin to restrain lateral movement of the guardrail post, allowing the post to yield by bending proximate to ground level, replicating the post yielding performance in flat, well-compacted terrain.
The RamShield Edge pin is anchored in front of the barrier system therefore not relying upon lateral support behind the post. This restraint mechanism is independent of soil type, compaction level or batter geometry behind the post. The capacity of the restraining pin can be validated by performing onsite dynamic load impacts using Safe Direction’s THOR machine.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does RamShield Edge work?
RamShield Edge is a variant of RamShield High Containment that features below ground pins designed to restrain the movement of the posts when installed adjacent to weak soil embankments.
How are the RamShield Edge pins installed?
Following the installation of the conventional RamShield High Containment posts, an additional pin is driven back into the road formation at approximately 45 degrees and is clamped to the post just below ground level.
How do the pins behave during a vehicle impact?
The RamShield Edge pin prevents below-ground post movement allowing the post to yield by bending at ground level, replicating post behaviour in flat, well-compacted terrain. RamShield Edge prevents the post from rotating through the back of the embankment, limits barrier deflection and facilitates safe vehicle containment and redirection.
How can the sizing of the pins be validated?
The restraint capacity of the RamShield Edge pins can be validated on-site using the mobile THOR apparatus which performs a high-energy, dynamic impact.
What is the performance advantage of RamShield Edge?
The RamShield Edge pin is anchored in front of the barrier system therefore not relying upon lateral support behind the post. This restraint mechanism is independent of soil type, compaction level or batter geometry behind the post.
What is the maximum slope for the installation of RamShield Edge?
RamShield Edge has been crash tested in accordance with MASH Test Level 4 (TL4) when installed adjacent to a 1:1 weak soil embankment.
What is the minimum distance required behind the post to the batter hinge point?
Crash testing of RamShield Edge was undertaken with the posts positioned on the hinge point.
What are the disadvantages of simply installing longer posts?
The installation of conventional posts relies upon the soil strength behind the post to provide sufficient lateral support. In weak soils conventional posts will likely push through the back of the embedment even when longer posts are installed.
What are the cost advantages of installing RamShield Edge?
RamShield Edge is an economical alternative to expensive shoulder widening and embankment stabilisation. Positioning the barrier on the hinge batter conserves valuable vehicle lane width and retains important recovery space between the edge of the travelled way and the barrier.
Can RamShield Edge be used on other barrier systems?
No. The RamShield Edge pins are only compatible with RamShield High Containment.
