RamShield Low Deflection

RamShield Low Deflection combines the sectional strength of C-posts with w-beam guardrail to reduce the clearance required between the barrier and roadside hazard, an important design consideration for installation on narrow formations. RamShield Low Deflection achieves a controlled redirection of errant vehicles by regulating the force to release the guardrail throughout the impact zone, limiting dynamic deflection and to allow the C-post to collapse without tripping the vehicle.

The installation of RamShield Low Deflection may be configured with or without blocking pieces providing design flexibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the definition of dynamic deflection?

Dynamic deflection is the maximum lateral movement of a road safety barrier system when struck by a vehicle during crash testing. It represents how far the barrier deflects or bends under impact, measured from its original position to the furthest point displaced during collision.

RamShield Low Deflection has been developed to shield roadside hazards that are located close to the edge of the roadway. The low deflection result reduces the required distance between the barrier and the roadside hazard.

RamShield Low Deflection may be installed with the w-beam guardrail mounted directly onto the C-posts creating a narrow width system. Alternately the system may be installed with spacer blocks, known as a RamBlocs, positioned between the w-beam rail and C-posts.

The installation of blocking pieces allows the face of the w-beam guardrail to be offset from the C-post, an important design consideration when accommodating the alignment of drainage or edge of asphalt beneath the safety barrier system.

The standard width of a RamBloc is 150 mm. The RamBloc is manufactured from rectangular hollow section providing torsional strength.

Yes. RamBlocs are available in widths of 200 mm, 250 mm and 300 mm providing design flexibility. The increased width of the RamBloc does not change the system dynamic deflection or vehicle stability during impact.

RamShield Low deflection with and without blocking pieces has been crash tested in accordance with MASH Test Level 3 (TL3).

Yes. At constrained sites where the available clearance between the barrier and hazard is limited and insufficient to accommodate the standard barrier deflection, the spacing of the posts may be reduced to 1.0 m centres.  Please refer to the Product Manual and Drawings for design guidance.

Yes. In circumstances where an underground service or obstruction prevents the RamShield Low Deflection system from being installed with posts driven into the ground, a concrete strip footing may be constructed to accommodate posts with base plates. Please refer to the Product Manual and Drawings for design guidance.

Yes. RamShield Low Deflection may be installed with BikerShield which is positioned beneath the w-beam guardrail and prevents a dismounted motorcyclist from contacting the supporting posts of the guardrail barrier. The BikerShield spring brackets attach directly to the w-beam mid-span between posts and absorb the impact energy of the sliding rider. Please refer to the Product Manual and Drawings for design guidance.
