Introducing ZebraFence®

Developed by Safe Direction, ZebraFence® is a MASH compliant fencing system designed for installation at road intersections, footpaths, bus stops, school crossings, roadside alfresco dining and cycleways. ZebraFence® provides full separation and shields vulnerable road users from errant vehicles.

ZebraFence® has been full-scale crash tested in accordance with MASH Test Level 2, providing containment of a 2270 kg pickup truck travelling at 70 km/h and 25 degrees. Secondary impacts on the damaged fence have also been undertaken, including a 2000 kg SUV travelling at 80 km/h and 15 degrees, demonstrating the reserve capacity of the system and its robust construction.

In addition, ZebraFence® has been crash tested with a 2000 kg dual cab utility travelling at 40 km/h and 90 degrees, representing installation at an intersection or car parking area.

The crash testing of ZebraFence® included the supporting posts installed in soil, installed in a concrete pavement, and positioned behind a kerb and gutter. The system height of 1200 mm discourages pedestrians from climbing over the fence and the offset vertical balusters facilitates line of sight for pedestrians and motorists.

The panel to post connection facilitates a step of up to 100 mm between panels providing consideration for sloping sites. The system does not contain sharp edges which could be a danger to those who use the railing for support or guidance and there are no protrusions that could snag cyclists as they pass.

National Sale Manager, Peter Watson comments “Many types of pedestrian fencing systems are currently installed along roadways, however these systems are categorised as channelising devices, designed to direct pedestrians to safe crossing areas rather than stopping errant vehicles. By comparison, ZebraFence® is a crash tested pedestrian fencing system and should be the preferred fencing option if shielding vulnerable road users is the primary design consideration.”

Safe Direction is committed to improving the safety of our roadways and the safe system approach. For more information, please view the Safe Direction ZebraFence® webpage.
