TAU-M Narrow
The Universal TAU-M is a narrow MASH TL3 compliant crash cushion designed to shield the blunt ends of concrete barriers and other hazards. Featuring energy absorbing cartridges, the Universal TAU-M is supplied as a pre-assembled unit to facilitate rapid installation, limiting the time workers spend on the roadside and minimising disruption to traffic. The Universal TAU-M is fully re-directive and non-gating, providing safe vehicle containment and ride-down decelerations. The system can be secured directly to a concrete pad or asphalt road surface.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the TAU-M work?
The TAU-M is a fully redirective, non-gating crash cushion. The TAU-M utilises tensioned cables, telescopic thrie-beam panels and energy-absorbing cartridges to absorb kinetic energy and safely contain or redirect impacting vehicles
What crash testing has been performed with the TAU-M?
The TAU-M has been crash tested in accordance with Test Level 3 (TL3) of the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH).
What is a non-gating crash cushion?
A non-gating crash cushion is fully redirective meaning that if a vehicle strikes the side of the cushion, it is safely redirected back along the traffic flow rather than being allowed to penetrate or pass behind the system. This makes the TAU-M suitable for installation in a roadway median with two-way traffic.
What are the available TAU-M configurations?
The TAU-M is available as a MASH TL2 configuration measuring 4.3 m long or a MASH TL3 configuration measuring 6.9 m long.
What components of the TAU-M need to be replaced after a design impact?
Typically, only the damaged cartridges will need to be replaced. The nose and slider panels may withstand multiple design impacts.
What type of foundation is needed for the TAU-M system?
The TAU-M crash cushion may be installed on a concrete pad or secured directly to asphalt. Please refer to the Product Manual.
What is the width of the TAU-M?
The width of the TAU-M is 880 mm.
Is the TAU-M suitable for installation in the roadway median?
Yes. Crash testing of the TAU-M in accordance with MASH TL3 included a reverse direction impact making the TAU-M suitable for a median installation with two-way traffic.
What transitions are available with the TAU-M
The TAU-M features thrie-beam side panels that may be connected to a public domain thrie-beam transition. If the TAU-M is installed at the end of a concrete barrier and traffic travels in the reverse direction to the crash cushion, a transition preventing pocketing at the interface between the systems is required.
Can the NCHRP-350 TAU-II be upgraded to a MASH compliant TAU-M
Yes, existing NCHRP 350 TAU-II systems can be retrofitted into MASH TAU-M systems.
